I don’t know about you, but I need easy when it comes to appetizers. Life gets busy, guests show up hungry, and honestly…the simplest things always end up being the crowd favorites anyway. So today I’m spilling my go‑to cheese appetizer secrets and the hosting accessories I always keep within reach to ensure everything comes together effortlessly when friends and family are on their way.

1. Classic Cheese and Crackers

There’s just something comforting about cheese and crackers. It’s familiar, it’s unfussy, and it’s always the first thing guests scoop up without even thinking. I like to set out a couple of cheese options — maybe a sharp cheddar and something creamy — and let guests build their own little bites.

Everything you need can be found at any local grocery store! Just grab the crackers you love most and a couple of cheese cube or cheese slice varieties like cheddar, colby jack, pepper jack, or gouda. They store well in the fridge and pantry, they’re ready when you need them, and they make this appetizer feel completely effortless.

You can simply place your crackers and cheese on a plate, tray, or charcuterie board. I personally pull out this simple Merrimack Cracker Tray because it keeps everything neat, easy to grab, and just plain charming. Place your crackers in the tray, then plate your cheese slices, cheese cubes, or cheese chunks, and you’ve got a classic little setup that feels polished without any extra effort.

2. Cream Cheese with Pepper Jelly

This one is practically effortless, but it tastes like magic. A block of cream cheese, a spoonful of pepper jelly, and crackers on the side — that’s it. It’s a viral Southern favorite for a reason: sweet, a little spicy, and creamy… it’s the trifecta.

To make it, just unwrap an 8‑ounce block of room‑temperature cream cheese and place it on a small plate or serving dish. Warm your pepper jelly in the microwave for about 15–20 seconds until it’s pourable, then spoon it right over the top. Add crackers on the side and you’re done. It truly doesn’t get any easier. I’ve written out all of the instructions in a separate recipe post here in case you want to print it out and tuck it into your recipe book.

Want to know my favorite little cheese‑appetizer accessory? These tiny mouse placecard holders add so much whimsy to the table. They’re playful without being over the top, and they always make people smile when they spot them. I tuck one or two beside each cheesy appetizer, and they instantly make the whole spread feel more fun.

3. Pimento Cheese with Bacon Jam

If you want something that feels indulgent with almost no prep, this is your winner. It’s a true Southern favorite, the kind of thing you might spot on appetizer menus here in the South. We used to have a restaurant here in Greenville, SC called Bacon Brothers that served this appetizer, and we ordered it every time we walked in the door. Most of us already love pimento cheese on its own, but when you take a delicious warm bacon jam and spoon it over the top, it becomes something else entirely. Rich, sweet, savory — just so good.

You can go with all store‑bought favorites for this one, or you can personalize it with homemade ingredients to suit your tastebuds. I would probably pick up my favorite pimento cheese from the store (our South Carolina favorite: Palmetto Cheese) and then whip up a batch of fresh warm bacon jam at home. There are so many variations of bacon jam out there — some with maple syrup, bourbon, coffee, and all kinds of extras — so find the one that fits your style. No need to be too prescriptive here. This is one of those appetizers that’s even better when you discover what you like best and make it your own.

The Bacon Brothers restaurant served this delicious appetizer in the most charming little jelly jars. Genius! They’re perfect appetizer‑sized portions, and you don’t have to worry about anyone double‑dipping. (Have I ever told you that double‑dipping is one of my biggest pet peeves? I’m basically the double‑dip police around here.) You can pick up these little jars at Amazon, Walmart, Target — anywhere, really. Just keep a stash of these jars in your hosting accessory stockpile and pull them out when you want to "wow" people with minimal prep.

Prep a little. Impress a lot.
